Words can’t express how excited I am for it to be spring. Aside from the pollen that does a number on my allergies, I love the weather and the flowers! I absolutely LOVE flowers and have already adorned my home with some mums.

Of course, with the season change came some pretty awesome fabrics and spring fashion lines. I am particularly in love with Joni Marie Ross’ latest spring line. If you haven’t heard of her, she’s an Atlanta based fashion designer who hand makes each of her items. I first stumbled across her years ago via Instagram and she always serves in her collections. This spring is no different. Her latest line features a maxi skirt, draped cardigan, a wide leg pant and wrap shirt set, and more! I was drawn to it because of the gorgeous, floral fabric.

Like most looks that I ogle over on social media, I took screenshots of them and made a mental note to make my own inspired versions. Well, I basically wanted to make EVERYTHING in her collection. Fortunately for me, nothing seemed out of my reach to make as a beginner. If I didn’t already have a pattern that would make a similar version, I was able to find one that could.

Finding the pattern was only half the battle. It was the fabric that did it justice, so I went on a hunt to find a similar fabric. You guys know that I’m big on ordering online, but Google failed me. I searched high and low to find something similar to no avail. Talk about disappointment.

Needing to go to the fabric store to pick up some interfacing for another project, I was stopped dead in my tracks. There, among the shelves in Joann, was every single piece of fabric used in her collection. I literally almost lost it as I hurried to put the fabric rolls in my cart before anyone else spotted them. Trust me, there would have been an all out brawl if someone dared to grab them. Ok, not really, but it was serious. After 2 (and counting) trips to Joann, I picked up 3 of the 5 fabrics that I intend on purchasing (among others)…and of course, I got them on sale! 

So, the first fabric that I picked up (not pictured) is the exact stretch crepe fabric used for Joni’s two piece jumpsuit shown above. I purchased 4 yards to replicate her outfit, with some extra to spare. I will be using the New Look 6735 pattern view D with a modified blind hem to construct the pants. For the top, I’ll be using the top portion of the McCall’s MP353 romper pattern, which is oddly called M7099 everywhere else except on the pattern that I purchased. Weird.

Next, I picked up the blue stretch satin used for her two piece high waist pants and shirt ensemble.I plan to make view A of the McCall’s MP353/M7099 romper pattern. There are several notions that I still need to get for this one, including a snap and elastic, but it’s next up on the list of projects.

There were two more fabrics from her collection that I also found at Joann. The first is the blue, floral printed cotton fabric used for her peplum skirt. I plan to make slim ankle trousers or shorts with it. I’m open to pattern suggestions! I have not decided if I’m sold on the stretch chiffon used in her floral, ombre skirt. She uses this fabric for a pique dress, similar to New Look 6223 view C. If I decide to purchase it, I’d probably use it to make a self drafted maxi skirt. 

There were two additional fabrics that are not a part of her collection, that I also fell in love with. (I told you I LOVE flowers and floral print). The first is another stretch satin that I was dying to get, but had to contain myself. I plan on using this to create another pussy bow blouse from my last blog post. The second, cotton floral print was another great find. I’m considering making another pair of slim ankle trousers or a pique dress…or both! It reminds me of a dress that I saw Tia Mowry wear years ago and I’d like to recreate it.

Overall, GREAT finds at Joann. I was very surprised and impressed, as I often don’t find much as far as fashion fabrics there. I’ve seen some other home sewists on Instragram making patterns with these fabrics, so they’re really popular. Check out your local Joann store to grab you some!
