I’m super excited to share this new look! If you’ve read my previous DIY blog, then you know that I’m obsessed with spring floral fabrics. In my spring fabric haul, I mentioned several of the fabrics that I picked up from Joann and my style inspiration from Joni Marie Ross. Well, this two piece jumpsuit is the first of those inspired looks come to life.

You can find the original jumpsuit from Joni’s spring collection here; however, I wanted to sew something with my own twist. And twist I did.

I’ll admit, this look was a bit of an accident. The pants were created using my New Look 6735 pattern that was in my stash. I knew going in that I’d have to make some adjustments to the sizing, as my hips are much larger than my waist. So, I used the pattern pinning method that I learned from my new book purchase, Pants for Real People. I graded down at the waist, creating darts and pleats to help compensate for the difference. Nonetheless, when the pants were complete, they were still too big around the waist. 

After playing around with them for a bit, I decided to put a waist band on them that would tie in the back, creating a “peek-a-boo” affect with the pants. This one tweak changed the whole trajectory of this outfit and pretty much gave it life! Best mishap I’ve ever had, if I say so myself.

Adding waistband gave this look so many options. It can be tied in a bow at the back as shown above, crossed to the front and tied, or even worn suspenders (not pictured). 

The top was made using Mimi G’s 1283 Simplicity pattern. I had originally planned on using another pattern, but this one just felt right for this look. I modified it by not using the turtleneck and my making the sleeves shorter. I also used a hook and eye instead of a zipper to create a keyhole look in the back. I already had the pattern cut from my turtleneck dress project, so I was able to cut and sew this within an hour or so.

Together, the pants and crop top can be styled to appear as a continuous jumpsuit, or if you’re fancy, you can wear it as a two piece.

I also enjoy the fact that these can be worn as separates. I paired the top with an orange bodycon dress that I purchased from Asos last year and it went perfectly. Of course, it also goes well with a nice pair of skinny jeans…but you won’t catch me out the house with it worn that way. ☺

This is by far my favorite project and the one that I’m most proud of. I took a sizing issue and turned it into a master piece. To top it off, it didn’t even take long! Both pieces were made within a few hours. That’s always a win in my book.
