DIY Duster Cardigan

Have you ever been working on a project and things just didn’t go right? Well, that would be this project for me. From a cut finger, to a broken needle, to a gaping hole in a finished sleeve, to miscalculating lengths, this project was determined to give me a run for my money. In spite of it all, I came out with this beauty.

This project was inspired by MimiG’s Cardi Turned Dress blog post. I completely fell in love with her dress and had to make my own. However, just before adding buttons to make it a dress (and because I was pressed for time), I decided to leave it as a duster. I have to say, I absolutely love it the way it is. I have so much flexibility to style it as a duster as opposed to a dress. I will, however, still make the dress using the same pattern.

This duster was made using the New Look 6735 cardigan pattern. The pattern was very simple to make, with the only alternations being additional length and not adding buttons. I chose a stretch knit fabric that sewed pretty easily. This material was medium weight and breathable, perfect for these 70 degree (F) “winter” days that we’ve been getting in the south. It is see-through when put up to light, so if made into a dress, it would require the appropriate undergarments.

Though I made the belt that came along with the pattern, I decided not to use it. It made the cardigan look like a bath robe, which isn’t what I was going for. Although, after playing around in the mirror with it, thinking of ways to style it, I determined that this pattern could be used for a bath/lingerie robe or for a coverall. There are endless possibilities with this pattern and I intend to explore them all.
